[Research in scientific computing and its application to a broad set of scientific problems in:
 (1)   Environmental studies:
         - simulation of contaminant flow in porous media with adaptive mesh
           refinement/derefinement;
         - fluid and gas flow simulations using lattice Boltzmann method (on programmable
           graphics cards);
         - data analysis and visualization tools for studying rock samples (synchrotron computed
           microtomography) with application to fluid flow in porous media.
 (2)   Medical science:
         - image segmentation and registration algorithms with application to mouse brain studies;
         - data mining tools and techniques for early cancer detection.
 (3)   Basic energy sciences:
         - explore the use of programmable graphics cards for Monte Carlo type simulations;
         - data analysis and visualization tools for nuclear and particle physics.
