Project Profile

This project is a testament to the undeniable importance of sparse matrix codes for such broad communities as those involved in scientific simulations and engineering applications. The Sparse BLAS standard proposed decades ago has not seen many updates and has not gained enough traction in the community to become a reference point allowing for portability and performance across different hardware architectures. A wide range of scientists and software engineers from academia and industry are working together to discuss the design of a new Sparse BLAS standard. Two years of weekly virtual meetings and two hybrid workshops led to a mutually agreed upon general blueprint for an interface for sparse BLAS functionality. The next steps are the realization of a reference implementation and the interfacing of existing vendor libraries through the sparse BLAS API.
