PAPI multiplex error

When i try to multiplex an eventset using PAPI_set_multiplex(EventSet) i get the following error:
ERROR -17 PAPI_ENOCMP
papi_avail gives me the following:
Kernel is 2.6.32 with pcl support.
Is this a papi configuration error, or actually my hardware cannot support this operation?
