For example, for dpotrf, I understand "d" is for double precision, "po" is for positive definitive. But what about 'trf'. Why not just called it chol for cholesky factorization?

http://www.netlib.org/lapack/lug/node24.htmlIn the case of DPOTRF, the TRF stands for TRiangular Factorization. There are also routines TRI and TRS for TRiangular Inverse and TRiangular Solve.
